Cortez conquered the Aztec Indians. Pineda mapped the whole coast of Texas.A Spanish expedition consisting of 11 ships is setting sail westward in hopes of expanding the Empire. News had reached Velasquez, the governor of Cuba, that some of his men had found land past the oceanic horizon where the sun sets. Velasquez appointed Hernan Cortes as Captain-General of the Armada and sent him off to follow the rumor.

Cabeza de Vaca leaves for Spain but Estevanico, Alonso del Castillo and Andres Dorantes stay in the New World.Cabeza de Vaca reports on his eight year expedition across Texas. He also speaks of the inhumane treatment of the natives by the Spanish Conquistadors and the abuse of the Encomienda system. This coincides with new laws concerning the treatment of natives Cabeza de Vaca is granted the post of Governor of the La Plata regions (Argentina) Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca spends three years writing an account of his eight year expedition across Texas providing descriptions of his experiences, the land and the natives. It is called La relacion.

Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle established Fort St. Louis at Matagorda Bay, and thus formed the basis for France's claim to Texas. Two years later, LaSalle was murdered by his own men.French and Spanish Conflict:In December, 1718, war was declared by France under the regent duke of Orleans against Spain. The news reached the French colony of Louisiana in the spring of the next year when hostilities to a limited extent were carried on between the French and Spanish settlements in Texas. The French government had anticipated this by sending out the previous year some recruits for the stations and settlements.18 Febrary1685.
